"You just have to make it work."
– Ola Tveiten, 1927
1940s: Rationing, war and a new factory
Success came quickly, and soon the family expanded their equipment and built a factory next to their home on the Tveiten farm. Through dark times like WWII, when yarn was scarce and every item had to be carefully rationed to brighter days as Europe recovered, the Tveitens never stopped knitting.
Shortly after the war, Ola's sons, Åsmund and Odd Tveiten, took over the business. They built a new factory three kilometres from the farm, down by the fjord in the village of Hosanger. In those days, most traffic on Osterøy went by boat. By the fjord, goods could be shipped in and out with ease, and customers could come to visit. The Norlender factory still stands there today.
1980s: Change and the new generation
By the 1980s, low-cost imports had flooded the Scandinavian market, and the company had to fight to survive. In the winter of 1989, the third generation took over: Odd Tveiten's children Gyda, Astrid, Ola and Magnus, together with Gyda's husband, Alwyn Lewis. They replaced the factory's circular knitting machines with heavier flat-knitting machines, switched from cotton to wool, and started making sweaters and cardigans. With the new machines came a new name: Norlender. The years were hard. Many Norwegian textile factories closed in the same period. The Tveiten siblings kept theirs running.
"We could have closed the doors. Instead we bought new machines and started over with wool"
Astrid Tveiten, third generation
2000 to 2027: A family business turns 100
Today, Norlender is still a family affair, run by the third and fourth generations of the Tveiten family. Our focus remains the same: creating kind wool clothes with timeless designs, inspired by the heritage that shaped us. Our factory still sits by the peaceful Osterfjord in the village of Hosanger, where we welcome visitors year-round to experience our knitwear factory in Norway, and to see how we make Norwegian sweaters in Norway from Norwegian wool.
We craft each piece with care, drawing from nearly 100 years of history and dedication to quality. Whether you’re visiting our factory or wearing one of our cozy woolen pieces, you’re part of a story that began with a knitting machine and a family who refused to give up!
“Everything we do today rests on the generations before me. I’m proud of what they kept alive.”
Stephanie Tveiten, fourth generation
